Curly Q: I have pretty dry curls, but an oily scalp. I find myself having to shampoo frequently to avoid greasy roots, only for it to dry out the rest of my hair. How can I treat both issues and find a healthy balance? Help!

Believe it or not, this problem isn't all that uncommon. In fact, I struggle with it myself. Most women with curly hair deal with dryness, but that doesn't mean our scalps don't accumulate oil. Curly Qs: How can I keep my curls healthy if I heat style?

Curly Q: My hair is naturally curly, but I really like to  wear it straight from time to time. How can I prevent heat styling from damaging my curls?

I'll admit, even though I was born with a head full of curly hair, I have my days (sometimes even months) where I'd just rather wear it straight. Most non-curlies don't get it, but the truth is sometimes I just want a change. You know, like a non-permanent change that requires a little less primping and maintenance in the morning.

And hey, just like straight-haired chicas like to pull out the curling iron every here and there, we like to occasionally blow-out or flat-iron our tresses. But I must warn you ladies, if not done correctly, with time you can wind up with some serious heat damage that can totally ruin your curl pattern. Believe me, I've been there!

Save or splurge? Deep conditioners for curls

Being a curly haired chica, I definitely know how it feels to struggle with dryness. When it comes to getting healthy curls, hydration is always key. But the truth is not all conditioners leave my curls moisturized, bouncy, and defined. In fact, a lot of them leave them smooth but weighed down.

So I decided to try out some conditioning treatments that are especially designed for curly tresses. I tested out two sulfate-free conditioners (because they say sulfate wreaks havoc on curls): L'Oréal Paris EverCurl Hydracharge Conditioner ($8) against DevaCare One Conditioner ($19).
