Use the annular solar eclipse to teach your kids about science

My 5-year-old daughter Vanessa is a little nerd and I say that lovingly. She loves science and math, but she also loves writing and reading and pretty much everything in between. At school, her teacher has told me she's one of the most curious little girls she's taught in a while. She has a question for everything, but one of the areas that she's most interested in, believe it or not, is astronomy.

She's crazy about the solar system--and even got a talking model last Christmas that teaches her details about each planet--and so she's super excited about tomorrow's annular solar eclipse. Although I'm not a huge science buff--in fact, I don't really like science--her father is and so he's using this rare event as a great teaching opportunity.

I would never leave my kids at the park!

So tomorrow's national "Take Our Children to the Park... And Leave Them There" day and my kids won't be participating. Then again, they're only 5 and 2, so that has A LOT to do with my decision. I'm pretty sure I'd feel differently if they were, say, 14 and 11... maybe. Listen, I'm by no means a supporter of helicopter parenting, but there's no way I can get behind leaving children at the park in this day and age.

Although I'm all for letting children be children, I can honestly say this idea would be a bit too much considering all the potential dangers. Not to mention the possibility that some sicko might find out about this and take advantage of the situation.

Do your kids love Latin music?

I went to see Maná at the American Airlines Arena with my 13-year-old son as my date.

We had a blast. And not just because the concert was good, but because, for the first time ever, I think, my son realized, "Hey, rock en español is actually cool!" (and, by association, that makes me--the mom who got the tickets--a little bit cool, too).

It was a long time coming, but it seems my U.S. born and raised kids have finally fallen in love with Latin music.

What my special needs child has taught me about life is priceless!

The day my son Michael was diagnosed as severely deaf was the day I discovered the true meaning of motherhood. I don't think anything (and believe me I've had my ups and downs) has EVER been as painful to me. This was more than 14 years ago on a Wednesday. The previous Monday, the company I worked for had announced my promotion, but I can only remember how I felt the night I knew my son could not hear. I prayed to God that he would take away my house, my new title at work, and all of the material things that I had earned thanks to my rising career. I was overwhelmed by guilt, feeling that I had focused too much on work and not enough on the things that really matter in life.

The best way EVER to wake a baby up! (VIDEO)

Most parents dread the moment they have to wake up their baby from a nap. The tantrums, the grumpiness, the crying--it's never pretty. That is, unless you get creative like the family of the hilarious toddler did in this video!

This half-Chilean 3-year-old apparently adores listening to Nirvana. So to awaken the boy without any of the hysterics or drama, his brother and sister decided to try rousing him by blasting the band's song "Breed" out of their car stereo.  And it worked! Instead of freaking out and crying like many young kids would, this mini rocker starts drumming to the song before even opening his eyes.

I am done being judged by the breastfeeding police!

I've had it with the breastfeeding police and the "mommy wars" and I am going to tell you why.

The sniping, the scientific evidence, the super-moms and La Leche league pushing their principles like a bunch of door-to-door salesmen--it has all gotten way out of hand. Even the First Lady was dragged into the whole discussion, what a waste of her time!

Motherhood has become crazy--everyone judges how we birth, how we feed, how we discipline, how we talk to our kids, how we teach them consequences. Why can't people mind their own business?
