24 hours a day go so quickly, that we rarely take the time to look around us and appreciate what others have to offer. Participating as a judge of the MamásLatinas Awards this year gave me the rare chance to learn about the work that so many amazing Latina moms are doing within their communities and beyond-- a rare chance that turned into a gift to me as I was so inspired by their stories that I now feel fueled to go out and conquer the world! These are just some examples of the great lessons the MamásLatinas Awards finalists taught me...
Think about it for a couple of minutes and chances are there has been at least one amazing Latina mom (besides your own) who has been a real inspiration to you. I know I have come across some women who have used their inner strength to get past a difficult experience in life or their creativity and vision to start something new or help the people around them. Some of these women I've known first hand (my sisters, a good childhood friend, someone I've met through work) and others I've only known of but never had the chance to meet in person. I have learned so much from them--their heroic acts, everyday good deeds or their inspiring words alone have taught me a lesson or two.
Our staff at MamásLatinas has brought some of these Latina moms to light-- Glamis Haro Olga Custodio, Dolores Huerta to name a few--as we look for inspiration around us to bring inspiration to you. And we wonder, is yours one of such stories?
La semana pasada tuve el grandioso honor de asistir a una sesión informativa especial en la Casa Blanca como parte de un retiro para blogueras latinas auspiciado por Latism. Aunque el evento en su totalidad fue algo inolvidable, tengo que admitir que uno de los momentos que más me tocaron fue cuando escuché a Eliana Tardío, la madre de dos niños con síndrome de Down, hablar acerca de lo importante que es tratar a los niños con necesidades especiales igual como a cualquier otro. Es decir, que en vez de crear diferencias entre niños, lo importante es que se les trate a todos como lo que son: seres humanos.
Suena muy simple, pero lo cierto es que la sociedad tiene muchos prejuicios contra los niños con necesidades especiales y tiene mucho que ver con el hecho de que falta concientizar a la gente. Y eso es justamente lo que Eliana ha estado haciendo por varios años ya.

Although I went straight from high school to college, just like both of my parents did, I opted not to get an advanced degree after that. Honestly, I wasn't sure that I needed one--although my two Master's Degree-holding parents didn't necessarily agree with that sentiment.
Luckily for me, though, it's never too late to finish your education, something that inspiring Latina mom Glamis Haro is proving to be true.

La primera vez que vi a Eryka Becker, me impactó su gran presencia y su enorme carisma. Tuve la fortuna de conocerla en persona el año pasado, durante la primera entrega de los premios Íconos de Estilo de la revista Vanidades, en la ciudad de Nueva York, durante el Mes de la Hispanidad. Luego la volví a ver en la presentación del libro de la reconocida escritora Mariela Dabbah --quien fue quien me la presentó-- y sin duda, me volvió a impactar su gran porte. Y es que, Eryka es una mujer fuerte y decidida, algo que asombra a muchos, cuando notan que esta joven diseñadora de 33 años se apoya de unas muletas para caminar debido a que sufre de una parálisis cerebral.
