6 tips for keeping your curls healthy and shiny all winter long

It's always a challenge for me to keep my curly hair healthy and soft during the harsh winter months. The cold, dry climate leaves my curls frizzy, dry, and many times lifeless. Keep in mind curly hair is naturally dry to begin with. The trick is to keep your tresses moisturized, so they always look healthy and hydrated regardless of the weather. I've compiled a few easy tricks and tips, below, to help you protect your locks all winter long.

Save or splurge: Are fancy foundations really worth it?

If you have read any of the previous beauty posts I've written, you're probably used to me ranting about how hard it is to find foundation and other makeup for us tan sisters! This week, I took on the task of finding the perfect foundation, which was harder than I thought it would be. The finalists came down to one fancy pants foundation from a brand I've come to know and love, and one super affordable drugstore variety that can be found far and wide throughout the U.S.

Which formula won? You'll have to read after the jump to find out!

Save or Splurge? BB creams

I LOVE makeup, but I'm not one of those girls who cakes on a whole new face every morning. I'm actually of the opinion that perfect makeup should basically make you look really fresh faced, as if you just naturally rolled out of bed looking divine! We all wish, right?

This is part of the reason I was so excited about trying out these new BB creams. Last spring, when these all-in-one formulas started gaining traction, I sort of felt like they were too good to be true. I mean, come on--it's sort of hard to swallow that one product would ever be able to smooth out my skin, minimize pores, cover blemishes and dark circles AND moisturize and protect my delicate facial skin from the sun.

So, I tried two of these miracles-in-a-tube out, one high-end and one drugstore: Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35 ($42, bobbibrowncosmetics.com) and L'Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Skin Beautifier B.B. Cream ($10.99, ulta.com).

Here's my verdict...

Colombian hair competition showcases amazing Afro-Latino stylists (VIDEO)

The history of African descendants in Colombia--as in much of Latin America is wrought wit conflict and much pain. Slavery wasn't abolished until 1851, and even though Afro-Colombians participated at every level of government and were key in Colombia's fight for freedom against the Spanish, the government still encouraged "whitening" policies to rid citizens of any trace of African or Native descent among citizens--an action that today still colors the attitudes and prejudices of many Colombians (and sadly, this is seen through all of Latin America).

That's why this hair contest, held in the city of Cali, makes me feel a bit encouraged about my country's efforts to celebrate and encourage pride in our African roots.

London Olympics 2012: Gabby Douglas says hair comments are 'stupid'

During the London 2012 Olympics, Gabby Douglas became the first African-American and first woman of color to win a gold medal in the Women's gymnastics individual all-around competition. With the bubbly 16-year-old's great accomplishment, why are people focusing on her hair? The medalist doesn't seem to get the big deal either, responding that comments about her hair are "stupid" and "crazy".

Why are Latinas so obsessed with plastic surgery?

We all know that as a nation, the U.S. is pretty fixated on appearances--we are home to Hollywood after all! But according to a recent report by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there are six other surprising countries that also have no qualms about getting nipped and tucked, including two in Latin America: Brazil and Colombia.

On the list of the top 7 plastic surgery spots in the world, Brazil, Colombia and the United States take the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots respectively. In all three countries, liposuction was the most popular of the invasive surgeries with breast implants coming in a close second. And according to the data, Colombia has actually become a tourist destination for those loking for a little nip and tuck for a lot less money.

Love it or Leave it? La la Anthony's ombre bangs

Lately, I've seriously been considering ombre highlights. You know what I'm talking about? Those are the highlights where the bottom of your hair is way lighter than your roots. Salma Hayek had them, and Camila Alves rocked some really pretty and subtle ombre highlights for a while too.

Well, now La La Anthony is taking the trend to a whole other level. The actress, hostess and mom recently stepped out the other day for the Atlanta premiere of her new film Think Like a Man showing off an edgy new hair do!

Do you feel ugly without makeup? Cause I do!

Confession: I never leave the house without makeup. Unless I'm going to sweat my butt off at hot yoga or something like that, I always at least wear tinted moisturizer and mascara. And sometimes I even buy waterproof mascara so that I actually can wear it to yoga!

Why go to such extremes? It's not that I'm supremely self-conscious or that I always wear a ton of makeup--it's just that I feel so naked without a little something on my face. Plus, I grew up listening to my old-fashioned abuelita call my mom and aunts "palidas" whenever they didn't wear blush.

Well, apparently my abuela and I aren't the only ones who feel this way. A recent study by the Renfrew Center Foundation found that nearly half of women in the U.S. said they felt unnatractive when they weren't wearing makeup. 14 percent also said that (like me!) they felt naked without makeup and 25 percent started wearing makeup between the ages of eleven and thirteen.
