People who put themselves in the line of fire to save others deserve to be rewarded for their heroism. At least, that's what you would think! But a 16-year-old Florida high school teen is saying he's actually being punished after wrestling a loaded gun away from another student.
Last week on the bus ride home, a 15-year-old suspect aimed the gun at another student and threatened to shoot him because he had been arguing with a friend. That's when the boy in question and several other teens got involved. After struggling with the gunman, they managed to get the weapon away from him. So amazing and brave, right?
Well, apparently, the school doesn't think so. Instead of thanking the teen hero for his actions, the school slapped him with a three-day suspension the very next day! "It's dumb," he told Fox 4. "How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?"
I can't say I blame him for feeling that way! He put in his own life in danger to save one of his peers and now he's being punished? That hardly makes sense.
According to the school, he was suspended for being part of an "incident" where a weapon was present. So I guess they neglected to write down the part where he wrestled said weapon away? Ridiculous.
Meanwhile, the teen's mother says the school suspended her son because he wasn't cooperating in the investigation out of fear of getting punished. Well, clearly that didn't work in his favor. Though he should've been more willing to talk to the police, I would think that the school would cut him some slack given his recently potentially traumatic experience...and, y'know, the fact that he saved another student's life. Seriously, how many teenagers do you know would stand up against someone with a gun? He and anyone who helped him all deserve a medal!
Thankfully, justice was served in some way as the suspect was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
Still, I can't help but hope that all this scrutiny makes the school think twice and apologize to the brave teens. Their actions deserve to be publicly appraised!
