It's a sad day for the world when a 12-year-old boy is capable of threatening his entire school with a mass shooting. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened at Twin Peaks Middle School in California last week.

According to the police, the student was taken into custody on Saturday after a school administrator received an email in which the boy threatened to bring firearms and 3,000 rounds of ammunition into the school and kill 23 students and a teacher. What could possibly have driven such a young kid to do something like that?

The local sheriff's department worked with school officials and a technology crimes task force to trace the email and identified a seventh-grade student as the suspect. After searching his home, they recovered several computers, as well as five rifles, three shotguns and three handguns. Authorities said the weapons were locked away at the time and that the boy did not have access to them.

Meanwhile, the 12-year-old was taken into custody and has since been admitted to a local hospital for treatment. He could potentially face a felony charge for making a terrorist threat and the San Diego district attorney's will decide if criminal charges will be brought against the minor as well.

I find it horrifying and disturbing to see that a middle-schooler is even capable of making such threat. He's just a little kid! I know it could simply be a case of a child doing something absurdly stupid while in a state of anger, but even if it is, I'm glad they took him to the hospital because this boy clearly needs some serious help. Thankfully, the gun owners--presumably his parents--were responsible enough to keep them away from their young son but what if they weren't? And what if he hadn't sent an email warning others of his plans? I don't even want to think about the potential harm this child could've caused others or himself.

All I can say is that there's something very wrong with society when a 12-year-old thinks that the only way to relieve his pain, frustration or whatever his emotions may be, is by firing a gun and killing 24 people. I'm just relieved that in this particular case, no one was hurt and I pray that this boy gets the treatment he desperately needs.
