Teacher avoids rape charges for having sex with student by marrying him!

A North Carolina teacher pretty much got away with statutory rape simply by marrying her alleged victim. YEP. As crazy as that may sound, 42-year-old Leah Simpson was charged with statutory rape for having a sexual relationship with her 15-year-old student, Johnnie Ray Ison, in 2009. THEN, after divorcing her husband of 19 years, she married Ison in 2011 when he was 17.

If that doesn't sound absurd enough, listen to this: the boy's mother approved of the marriage and because of their union, Simpson got stripped of a 15 year rape charge and was only hit with misdemeanor charges. Incredible, huh?

This story is just crazy and raises so many questions... Like, for example ... what's wrong with this mom for allowing her son to get married to his alleged rapist?! But it turns out that this is legal through the state.

According to Newser.com, In North Carolina, a defendant's spouse can only testify against the defendant in certain cases, but underage sex doesn't qualify. And the problem with this was the fact that although Ison did admit to the affair, police could only charge Shipman if he testified.  

Meanwhile, the teacher's punishment was losing her job at Wilmington High School and serving a year's probation. In the end, her crime was reduced to a misdemeanor of just resisting a police officer's arrest. In other words, Shipman got away with her crime and all she did was marry her victim!

Words can't explain how weird and disturbing this story is. It's unbelievable that this teacher got away with doing something illegal and sick which makes me think that these state laws need to be altered! One thing for certain is parents need to be aware of what goes on in their kids classrooms, because for all they know they can have rapists like this woman as their teachers!
