Bullying is a VERY serious issue in schools across the country. Kids are committing suicide and becoming depressed more than ever and, with cyber bullying on the rose, it's easier than ever for kids to tease in the cruelest way possible. I'm always impressed by any school that is taking proper precautions to stop vicious bullying. That is, until I heard about the school that told the girl being bullied to change something about herself in order to stop it. In the worst piece of advice EVER, a school actually told a girl's mom that her 13-year-old daughter should consider a breast reduction surgery in order for kids to stop bullying her over her large breasts. Um, EXCUSE ME?!

This is the most disgusting thing that I can ever imagine coming out of a school's administrators mouths. How can they even DARE to suggest that the girl surgically alter herself in order to keep bullies away? That logic makes me so angry that I am seriously hoping that Tammie Jackson, the mom of the girl according to Jezebel.com, sues the school for all they are worth! Tammie described the Central Middle School incident FOX St. Louis:

It makes me feel like now you are telling me it's my fault, it's God's fault the way he made her. The lady on the phone said they could transfer my daughter and said her boobs were so large she will always get teased. And the only suggestion she had for me is to have my daughter get a breast reduction.

I feel that this is the most ridiculous thing that a school can possibly ever suggest in order to curb bullying. I mean, seriously, this girl's family should NOT have to consider major reconstructive surgery in order to make her less teased. I mean, seriously, if the boys and girls are teasing her now over her too-big breasts, are they REALLY going to let up when her breasts are suddenly smaller? This is just beyond offensive and I really hope that the school does something to fix this problem, and their disgusting remarks, ASAP. It is just completely unacceptable!

I find this story simply outrageous! Bullying is a systemic problem that should be dealt with by the school and society at large. For the school officials to even suggest a 13-year-old have surgery to correct the size of her breasts is bordering on gender discrimination. The idea that sexual harassment is the victim's fault is archaic and I object. The ethics of performing surgery on teens concerns me. Physical maturity is not the only concern in performing facial surgery for teens, also emotional maturity must be taken into consideration. I will generally only perform cosmetic surgery on the ears and the nose for a teenager under the age of 18, and only after a thorough consultation with the teen and his or her parents. Sometimes the corrections are medically advised. Realistic expectations are important, as are the motivations for surgery. An institution "suggesting" surgery to minimize bullying and sexual harassment is not a proper motivation. Dr Rhys Branman Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center
