In case parents needed a reminder of how important it is to be aware of your kids' Facebook activities, here's a story for you: a 21-year-old Canadian man used the social media site to lure a 13-year-old girl into meeting with him before allegedly raping her.
So awful ... but sadly it gets even worse from there.
Apparently, Alexander Kennedy and the unidentified girl became friends on Facebook and began talking, even after they both knew each other's age. They arranged to meet at a public park and that's when the teen says Kennedy raped her. According to police, she tried to fight him off, but eventually "just took it." Ugh, that's so sickening.
But Kennedy tells a different version of the story. Though he admitted to knowing the girl was only 13, he says she was the one initiate sex with him. He also said that days after first meeting up, the teenager posed as someone else and once again tricked him into meeting at a nearby park. When he arrived, the girl and a friend supposedly beat him up!

Whether that part of the story is true or not remains to be seen as the judge ruled the assault as not central to the case. Prosecutors "rejected" the rest of his story and sentenced him …but only to 14 days in jail, which are to be served on weekends!
What?! Whether or not the sex was consensual, Kennedy still committed a form of rape as the girl was a minor when he met her and yet he only gets two weeks of jailtime? Which will only be served on the weekends for no apparent reason? That hardly seems like a suitable punishment. In addition to the jail time, Kennedy will also be on probation for one year and his name will be be included on the sex offender registry for 10 years. He is no longer allowed to interact with girls under 16--Canada's age of consent--on social media ... which would be comforting except this guy clearly has no problem finding ways to meet young teens.
I just hope that he somehow manages to learn something from this meager punishment and sticks to girls his own age from now on.
