Brave Sandy Hook students return to school for first time after fatal shooting

It's been a few weeks since the Sandy Hook shooting and now the students who were witnesses to the most devastating massacre in our history have gone back to school. Sandy Hook students were transferred to what was once Chalk Hill Middle School in Monroe, Connecticut as educators started the school day as normally as possible.

The New York Post shares that teachers have been trying to make the return as welcoming as possible even decorating signs near the new school grounds. Having gone through such a traumatizing experience, the school also made sure to have extra security on site.

I won't forget the morning I learned about this terrible school shooting. It was depressing and hard to believe that something so horrific had occurred on school grounds--at an elementary school no less. Now that these children are back in school, it makes you wonder if they're mentally well enough to go through their classes like normal.

One of the teacher's present on the first day back was Courtney Martin who taught the third grade and bravely shielded her students from the shooter on that gruesome morning. The teacher locked her classroom before the gunman, Adam Lanza, could cause harm to her and her students, and parents thanked her today for her quick thinking.

Not only did educators try to make the first day back as pleasant as possible for Sandy Hook students, but there was also a heavy police presence. They were even checking parents ID's, making it the safest school in America according to Monroe Police Lieutenant, Keith White.   

To make the transition easier for families and students alike, the school also permitted parents to visit the campus, sit in on classrooms, or the auditorium.

It's good to see that the school is doing everything in its power to make the first day for kids--and parents--as easy as possible. But I do hope they have counselors on hand too in case they need to talk to someone. After a scary experience such as that one, I'm sure both parents and the school board are paying close attention to the children's' needs.
