In a terribly sad story, 13-year-old Florida student, Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus, was shot and killed on a school bus on Tuesday morning. According to the police, the young girl died after a gun accidentally went off after another student, 15-year-old Jordyn Alexander Howe, took it out of his backpack and began displaying it on the bus.
Such a tragedy! My question now though is: why the heck did a student have a gun in the first place, let alone on the bus?
According to the police, the shooting took place around 6:45 a.m. yesterday. There were nine students on the bus at the time, including the victim's 7-year-old sister. Authorities recovered the weapon and Howe has since been charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm. No other students were injured.

I am just so saddened and horrified by this story. It's heartbreaking to know that a 13-year-old was killed by one of her own peers, who had absolutely no reason to ever be in control of a gun in the first place. How did a student get their hands on a weapon anyway? And how did no one notice that a young child was in possession of such a fatal item?
I can't even begin to imagine how devastated Guzman-DeJesus' family must feel, especially since parents trust that their children are going to be safe on a school bus. My thoughts and condolences go out to her parents and her loved ones.
