As a young woman who is normally pretty attached to her cell phone, I am obnoxiously adamant about not texting while driving. Maybe it's because I lost a friend in a car accident or maybe I'm just really paranoid and overcautious, but my friends and my older sister hate having me as a passenger because I'm constantly telling them to put the phone down. But I realized just howright I was in my instincts after hearing the story of 21-year-old Chance Bothe.
In a cruel twist of fate, Bothe was actually texting his friend the message, "I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident," when his truck plummeted off a Texas bridge and into a ravine.

Though Bothe miraculously survived, he sustained broke nearly every bone in his body and sustained major injuries, including some to the brain. Doctors also had to bring him back to life three times.
Now, six months after the near-fatal crash in which Bothe spent most of his time recovering in the hospital, he is finally ready to talk about the incident and the lesson he learned from it. "Don't do it. It's not worth losing your life," he told the Daily News.

Thinking of how close Bothe came to death makes me shiver with fear and terror. I can't imagine what it must be like to go through such a tragic and terrifying ordeal. Though he's incredibly fortunate to be alive, it's heartbreaking to think he could've avoided the whole crash had he simply followed his own advice. His story is a lesson and reminder to all drivers—young or old, parents or children, new or experienced—that no matter how addicting it is, your phone is not worth more than your life.
