I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a small town where my only real option as a girl is to be subjected to sex trafficking. Not much better, my brother would grow up as a little boy with the dream of one day becoming a pimp. But that's what's happening in the small Tlaxcala town by the name of Tenancingo in Mexico.

It's honestly something like out of one of those horrific movies, only this really isn't a script. The town's population is only about 10,000 and yet out of the 32 sex traffickers arrested last year by New York's Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office, 26 were from Tenancingo.
That's right, 80% of the men arrested (that's about every 4 out of 5) actually came from this tiny Mexican town. So why are so many of them turning to sex trafficking?
The Mexican government is really struggling with finding these men and actually punishing them. Apparently the "increased scrutiny has yielded 120 complaints and a mere 24 arrests, with not a single conviction." Really? Not even one conviction for a town that's overrun with sex traffickers? I don't know what to say except that this is extremely depressing.

The good news is that some in the government are doing everything they can to increase the laws. Mexican congresswoman Rosi Orozco has "acknowledged that something more needs to be done to curtail the rise of sex trafficking" and Tlaxcala, along with some other Mexican states, have passed laws that make human trafficking a crime. Still, with actual punishment still being rare, I hope the governments (both Mexican and US) will be able to figure things out and bring the more of the men down soon.
