Latin slow cooker: Flavorful old-school picadillo

One of my mother's go-to recipes has always been picadillo. It's always a hit and bound to satisfy. It's flavorful, lends itself to adaptation, and can be eaten with rice or beans or salad or whatever you like.

Picadillo is easy to prepare and popular in many cuisines including Mexican, Cuban, and Filipino. It is normally made with ground beef, but you can experiment. This slow cooker picadillo recipe can be made with either bison or lean beef. You could even try making it with ground turkey.

5 Easy healthy breakfast ideas to help you lose weight!

Healthy PHOTOS

You hear it over and over again: Bbreakfast is the most important meal of the day. We are told we should not skip breakfast even if you are trying to cut down on calories, it still isn't a meal we can afford to skip.

Breakfast is important for adults and even more so for children. Skipping this important meal has been linked to obesity. It makes sense that after hours of resting, your body would need to refuel and recharge with nutrients. As an adult if you skip breakfast, you may be setting yourself up to overeat at the next meal. Children in particular need breakfast because their growing bodies and developing brains need a regular intake of food. Putting them in a state of semi-starvation can cause behavioral, intellectual, and physical issues for them.

7 Mango recipes to make your mouth water

Mango PHOTOS

Do you keep track of what fruit is in season? Did you know mangos are in season right now? Are you wondering why you should keep track of what is in season? Are you tired of me asking you questions?

Time and time again, I hear that you should eat seasonally. Meaning that you should eat what is in season. Why? Why should we be eating seasonally? Well, there are many reasons, but here are a few:

  • Seasonal fruits and vegetables taste better because they are freshly harvested.
  • Seasonal produce is at its best price.
  • Seasonal (local) produce is better for the environment because it is not being shipped from thousands of miles away.

Sometimes it is hard to tell what is in season because if you go to the supermarket they may have produce that was flown in from who knows where that is not actually in season where you live. I usually look it up online. What did I do before the internet? I'll tell you what is in season right now: mangos or mangoes, if you prefer.

Delicious smoked salmon & eggs Benedict (EXCLUSIVE RECIPE)

National Eggs Benedict Day was earlier this week, but let's keep celebrating this perfect breakfast food. This is a fancy yet easy to make recipe, perfect for a weekend brunch: toasted English muffins are topped with Canadian bacon, pretty much the same size of the muffins, then a poached egg is placed on top on each muffin half, and finally covered with a thick buttery Hollandaise sauce to indulge your palate. In the following recipe I substituted the Canadian bacon by Smoked Salmon and it's worth it every bite…

The only 5 arroz con leche recipes you'll ever need

PHOTOS

You may disagree with me, but my tía makes the best arroz con leche in the entire world. I could be biased, but I don't think so. Maybe it's because hers is the first arroz con leche I ever had in my life and nothing will ever compare to the first.

Of course she has given me the recipe and it is just a simple arroz con leche, but when I make it, it somehow seems to lack my tía's touch. Does that stop me from making it or experimenting with other arroz con leche recipes? Absolutely not.

Latin Slow Cooker: Amazing pineapple pork tacos

Slow

Mmmm, something about pork lends itself so well to sweetness. That's why pineapple pork tacos work so well. I have to say that pineapple works really well with pork in general.

Not crazy about pineapple? Fine you can leave it out, but why not give it a chance before you knock it?

I find that tacos are great for families as well because you can make it so that everyone builds their own tacos and you don't have the usual, "but mom I don't like blahblahblah" complaints. Set yourself up with some ready-made taco shells or some corn tortillas you can warm up when needed and have a spectacularly flavorful taco night.
