I have a confession to make: I'm not really a fan of Thanksgiving. I know, I know, cue the gasps of horror...but let me explain why! Now that Desperate Housewives is over, Eva Longoria is taking her focus off the small screen and switching it on to food! The actress is giving her Las Vegas restaurant Beso and Eve nightclub a big makeover. Why? She apparently wants to make the steakhouse more female-friendly by adding a…wait for it…catwalk, 3D projection, fog machine, and menu with bite-sized items that are, I guess, more appropriate for women.

Everyone has Olympics fever right now, don't they? I'm not even a huge sports person and even less of a watching-sports-on-TV person (I prefer a live game, if I can catch one), but even I'm interested to see who wins and who loses.
Of course, I was most excited for my fellow countryman half-Cuban Ryan Lochte to win the first Olympic gold medal for Team USA. And, as usual, the first thing I did to celebrate was eat! Although I'm not Mexican, I love celebrating Cinco de Mayo. I take it as an opportunity to celebrate Latin culture in general and teach my American friends a thing or two about delicious Latin food and drink. We celebrated National Margarita Day with some delicious margaritas and even St. Patrick's Day with some great Latin beer cocktails.
But when it comes time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, this year I don't just want to rely on the typical cerveza and margarita for the festivities. While I love both of those drinks, sometimes I want something a little bit more inventive. So this year I'm having one of these other Mexican drinks to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. When I saw the recent video of Shakira dancing in the streets, it reminded me of the last time I was at a family party. We were blaring her song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" and nobody could stay off of the dance floor.

I am a Mexican that has been living in New York for the last 15 years of her life. Being the daughter of a foodie and wine connoisseur, I have been known to spend more than I should on the NY dining-out-experience. Every time my favorite critics rave about a new restaurant, I try my best to go and check it out. If the food is awesome I feel triumphant and if it isn't, I feel like an idiot for having spent the money…but hey, I guess one has to try.
Now, when it comes to Mexican food it's another story. I love Mexican food and miss it as much as I miss my family. So when people in New York tell me about the taco stand they just found or the new Mexican joints in their 'hood I "absolutely have to try," I always check it out--hoping to find something that's a bit closer to the food I grew up with, but it never is.
Si hay una cosa que realmente extraño de vivir en Miami--además de mi adorado océano, claro--es la comida. Aquí en Denver la comida es bastante buena, pero NADA como la variedad de comida en el sur de la Florida, especialmente si se trata de comida latinoamericana. Por eso es que a partir de mañana me va a dar mucha pena no estar en Miami ya que inicia el famoso Festival de Vinos y Comidas de South Beach.
Ya son once años que se viene celebrando este festival culinario en el cual participarán una treintena de chefs invitados, desde el famosísimo Emeril Lagasse hasta la colombiana Ingrid Hoffmann y la mexicana Marcela Valladolid ¡Qué daría por estar ahí y poder degustar los riquísimos platillos que algunos de los mejores chefs del mundo estarán preparando!
Today is officially National Margarita Day. Not that I need an excuse to have a margarita (or two), but I did enjoy brushing up on my margarita history yesterday, including finding out that the idea for the frozen margarita machine was based off of an ice cream machine.
But what I really want out of today is to try a new margarita recipe. I love the classic frozen one (like Aaron Sanchez's Margarita Granita recipe) but I also like to experiment with a spicy one (like the Spicy Blood Orange-Jalapeño Margarita below) or a sweet one (like the Mango-Avocado Margarita) to perfectly complement my guacamole snack before dinner tonight. These are just too perfect to pass up.
