Curly Q: I have pretty dry curls, but an oily scalp. I find myself having to shampoo frequently to avoid greasy roots, only for it to dry out the rest of my hair. How can I treat both issues and find a healthy balance? Help!
Believe it or not, this problem isn't all that uncommon. In fact, I struggle with it myself. Most women with curly hair deal with dryness, but that doesn't mean our scalps don't accumulate oil. Luckily there are definitely ways to combat both the oily scalp and dry ends. Check out a few of my own tips below!Continue Reading >
Before you decide to hit the beach for Memorial Day weekend, you should probably know that despite the required new sunscreen labels, a lot of them still carry SPF ratings that are totally misleading and in some cases even dangerous. A survey conducted by the Environmental Working Group found that while most of the sunscreen products out there do meet the new federal requirements that were placed in December, but there's still a lot of gimmicks going on. Terms like "waterproof" have been banned by the Food & Drug Administration, as well as saying that they block against ultraviolet A and B rays, because a lot of these products only block UVB rays that can cause sunburn, even though UVA rays are the ones that really put you at risk for developing skin cancer. Oh and you might want to stay away from SPF numbers above 50. Apparently it's all just BS!Continue Reading >

Curly Q: My hair is naturally curly, but I really like to wear it straight from time to time. How can I prevent heat styling from damaging my curls?
I'll admit, even though I was born with a head full of curly hair, I have my days (sometimes even months) where I'd just rather wear it straight. Most non-curlies don't get it, but the truth is sometimes I just want a change. You know, like a non-permanent change that requires a little less primping and maintenance in the morning.
And hey, just like straight-haired chicas like to pull out the curling iron every here and there, we like to occasionally blow-out or flat-iron our tresses. But I must warn you ladies, if not done correctly, with time you can wind up with some serious heat damage that can totally ruin your curl pattern. Believe me, I've been there!Continue Reading >
